Photo widget apps

A photo widget app puts pictures from specific people directly on your Home Screen, in the grid with your apps, so you see them when you unlock your phone instead of finding them later in a feed or a chat.

The short version: you install the app, add its widget to your Home Screen, and connect with the people you want photos from. When one of them sends something, the widget changes on its own. No notification to open, no app to check. Bubbl does this with three photos at a time, laid out like a strip from a photo booth, and it is free on iPhone and Android with no ads.

How a photo widget actually works

The widget is a small tile on your Home Screen that the app keeps up to date in the background. When somebody you are connected to posts a photo, your widget quietly swaps to it. The next time you pick up your phone, it is already there.

That is the whole appeal. A photo in a group chat competes with everything else in that chat. A photo on the Home Screen is on the screen you look at dozens of times a day, and it belongs to the handful of people you chose.

Two things are required and people often miss the second one. Both of you need the app, and the person receiving photos needs the widget added to their Home Screen. Without the widget, the photos arrive but there is nowhere for them to show up.

What to look for

Sending three photos instead of one

This is the part Bubbl does differently. Photos go out in sets of three, stacked like a strip from a photo booth, and the three arrive together as one post.

The reason is simple: an afternoon is a sequence. The setup, the moment, what happened right after. Picking a single frame means throwing away the two that gave it context. A strip of three keeps the story, and it reads less like posting and more like handing someone a disposable camera you both used.

Bubbl

Free on iOS and Android, no ads

Bubbl is our app, so try the free version rather than taking our word for it. It sends two kinds of things to a Home Screen: three-photo film rolls, and written notes you design with your own colors, fonts and emoji. Every post has an audience picker first, so you choose a friend, a community, or everyone before it leaves.

Reactions happen on the Home Screen itself, attached to the post. Setting up the widget takes about a minute on iPhone or Android.

How to set one up

  1. Install the app on both phones. In the App Store, Bubbl is listed as Bubbl Widget, spelled without a final e.
  2. Create your account and invite the first person. In Bubbl you choose whether they are a partner, family, or a friend, then send them a link through any other app.
  3. Once they accept, add the widget to your Home Screen. The full steps are in the iPhone guide and the Android guide.
  4. Send the first post. It appears on their Home Screen without them opening anything.

Questions people ask

Are photo widget apps free?

The main ones have a free tier. Bubbl is free on both platforms and runs no advertisements.

Can I send photos to just one person?

In some apps, no, everything goes to your whole group. In Bubbl you pick the audience for each post, so a photo meant for one person goes to that person only.

Do photo widgets drain the battery?

Widgets refresh in short bursts rather than running continuously, so the cost is small. The system decides how often, which is why a new photo sometimes takes a few minutes to appear.

Does the other person need the same app?

Yes. Photos can only land on a Home Screen through the app's own widget, so both sides need it installed.

Can I use it between iPhone and Android?

With Bubbl, yes. Some features reach one platform before the other.
